A Portrait session with Portland Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom for Street Roots

December 17, 2014

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to work on a portrait session with Brian Lindstrom for a featured interview for the Street Roots. Brian is a known Portland film maker known for his documentary "Alien Boy" that follows the case of the death of James Chasse while being arrested by Portland police officers and a Multnomah County officer. The case spured a wave of protest over police brutality while underlining the officers poor trainning on managing cases of mental illness. Now again behind the camera he has been working on a new documentary, "Modering Inside", a look at the Family Preservation Project at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, Oregon's only women's prison, due to be finish in January of this next year.

We meet for coffee in down town and stop for a cup of coffee close to the Multnomah court house, and took a walk on 4th avenue towards West Burnside, looking for a improvised "man on the crowd" shot, and some urban city scape. The light was almost perfect, with a overcasted middle of the day sky acting as a massive softbox and bouncing light out of every gray street, so basically, almost black and white perfect for the paper. I pointed Brian to look at an imaginary balloon I tell people I am carrying above my shoulder when I want them to not look at the camera but still get a good atmospherical half profile, which almost always works. Tried a few walks and poses while I was walked backwards in front of him luckily without running over any pedestrians, tried a 50mm prime at a range of  f2.8 and f1.8, but when the it was with the 80-200mm at 2.8 on my Nikon D700 where the shot came to life.

Bellow is the shot published by Street Roots on December 5th, 2014 and here you can find the story published on-line, which used the image above, the last picture, is probably, my favorite B series of that session. Thank you again for following, till next time,
